Phillip Banks’ X (formerly Twitter) account is private, but screenshots from his followers show that he announced on Thursday he is trying to copyright the “Chill Guy” character. He said he would be issuing “takedowns” to any businesses making money from the character without his permission. Banks also posted a Reel on Instagram, where he expressed his dislike for the use of the character in connection with cryptocurrency.
Who is ‘Chill Guy’?
The “Chill Guy” meme features an illustration of a brown anthropomorphic dog wearing a grey sweater, rolled-up blue jeans, and red sneakers. The dog has a subtle smirk, with its hands (or paws) in its pockets. It has a long, round head and a large snoot, and looks somewhat like Brian Griffin, the dog from the TV show “Family Guy.” Phillip Banks first shared this character on Instagram on October 4, 2023. In the caption of an Instagram Reel, Banks described the character as “a chill guy who lowkey doesn’t give a (expletive).”
The meme has become popular on social media, with thousands of videos featuring the character, mostly by men. Many of these videos use captions like, “When she thinks you don’t care about her, but you’re just a chill guy who enjoys being quiet,” or “When she yells at you for forgetting what she said earlier, but you’re just a chill guy having a good day.”

However, as the meme grows in popularity, Phillip Banks, who is believed to be the original artist behind the “Chill Guy” character, is seeking to copyright the artwork. With the meme’s widespread reach and the associated crypto token gaining value, Banks aims to protect his creation legally.
