China’s box office breaks record with $210 million on Chinese New Year

Chinese cinema has collected 1.43 billion yuan ($210 million) in sales on Chinese New Year.

BEIJING: In order to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Chinese have broken China’s box office record by crowding the cinemas. A professional box office tracker in China, Maoyan has revealed that the Chinese cinema has collected 1.43 billion yuan ($210 million) in sales on Tuesday, which is considered as their first day of the year.

Chinese Lunar New Year being a holiday weekend is a peak season for the Chinese cinema. Last year the single-day record was 1.27 billion yuan, which has gone up this year.

Tuesday’s biggest top three were all comedies releases like Ning Hao’s “Crazy Alien” topped the list with more than 403 million yuan, followed by Han Han’s “Pegasus” and Stephen Chow’s “The New King of Comedy.”China’s first big-budget sci-fi “The Wandering Earth” and animation “Boonie Bears: Blast Into The Past” came in the fourth and fifth places respectively.

The performance of the china’s box office during the Chinese new year is looked up as it gives hints for the whole year revenue and viewers favourite picks.

Last year “Operation Red Sea” and “Detective Chinatown II” were two of the hit films at the box office and contributed towards 10 per cent of revenues.

Like no exception, this year will also be dominated by domestic productions.
