In a big blow to the Opposition unity, cracks are appearing in the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar over Presidential Election and other issues. According to media reports, JD(U) and RJD are set to part ways. This issue could be a big setback for Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who has been making efforts to stitch a pan-India alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) based on the difficult friendship between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav in Bihar.

Commenting on the issue, Sushil Modi, from the opposition BJP said that “We are not surprised, we knew this alliance can’t survive 5 years”.  Speaking to News18, Modi said, the collapse of Congress-JD(U)-RJD grand alliance is inevitable.  On the question whether the BJP would support the Nitish government, he said the party would decide later. He thanked Nitish Kumar for supporting Modi government’s decisions like demonetisation and surgical strike.

Meanwhile, JD(U)’s KC Tyagi said that supporting Kovind is an isolated incident and doesn’t mean that Opposition is not united. He said that the political parties had decided on the name of Gopal Krishna Gandhi, but the Congress party didn’t take a decision on it. KC Tyagi raised an objection on Ghulam Nabi Azad’s statement on Nitish Kumar that people with one principle make one decision, whereas people with many principles make different decisions.
