Computer-Based NEET-UG: In a significant development for millions of medical aspirants, the Central Government has told the Supreme Court that it is actively looking into big shifts in the NEET-UG test. It includes a JEE-style two stage system and also a move toward a computer based test or CBT like screens instead of pen paper. However, the Centre clarified that no final decision has been taken and the proposed reforms will be finalized only after examining the recommendations of the High-Powered Task Force (HPTF) led by Nandan Nilekani.
What Did the Centre Tell the Supreme Court?
In its affidavit, the Centre said it is evaluating two possible models for the future of NEET-UG:
- A single-stage computer-based examination
- A two-stage examination on the lines of JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
The government stressed that these proposals remain under consideration and that a final decision will be taken only after the expert committee submits its recommendations.
Why?
The proposed overhaul follows recent concerns over the conduct of the examination and the need to strengthen India’s public examination system. The Centre told the apex court that it has already implemented several security measures and is evaluating further reforms to improve transparency, fairness and the overall examination process.

What Could a JEE-Style NEET Mean?
If implemented, a two-stage NEET could work more or less like the engineering entrance examination:
- Stage 1 would be a screening examination that covers all registered candidates.
- Stage 2 would be another examination only for the shortlisted candidates with admissions based on how they finally perform.
In a compliance affidavit submitted before a bench led by Justice P. S. Narasimha, the Ministry of Education said the reforms are meant to build a stronger and institutionalised examination system by tightening security and preserving institutional memory. Still, the government has not officially announced any concrete structure, eligibility requirements or even a clear timeline. The exact format will depend on the recommendations of the expert panel.
Computer-Based NEET-UG Also Under Consideration
The affidavit also states that the government is considering moving NEET-UG from the traditional pen-and-paper mode to a computer-based examination, similar to several other national entrance tests already conducted by the NTA.
The Centre has not announced when these reforms, if approved, would come into effect. Aspirants preparing for upcoming NEET examinations should continue to follow the existing syllabus and official notifications issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA) until any formal announcement is made.
