The Congress has criticised Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s statements on Hizbul Mujahideen chief Burhan Wani, calling for an explanation for the same. Mehbooba on Thursday said Wani would have been given “a chance” if forces had known about his presence during the encounter.

Congress leader Renuka Chowdhary said, “I think Mufti is completely confused, so I don’t know what she means by ‘chance’; and I don’t know what she is trying to convey but whatever it is, she should have more clarity and she should give more clarity to the people in the state and to the rest of the nation as well.”

The Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh responded to the statement as well saying “I don’t think it is right for me to make a judgmental statement on a issue which is as sensitive as this and is being dealt by security forces in extremely difficult situation.”

Mehbooba had also told reported on Thursday, “How are we supposed to know everything about every encounter? As far as I know and what I heard from the police and the army that they only knew there were three militants inside the house, but did not know who they were.”

National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah rubbished Mehbooba’s claim tweeting, “At NO point in the 1st JK police media briefing was it ever suggested that they didn’t know who was trapped.”
