Strongly condemning the statements made by Amit Shah on Mahatma Gandhi on Friday, Congress is demanding an apology from the BJP President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They are labelling Shah’s comments as an ‘insult’ to the Father of the Nation.

“Rather than fighting casteism, they [BJP] identified even the father of the nation with his caste,” Congress spokesperson, Randeep Surjewala, said.

“We demand that Amit Shah, BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise to the country, the families of freedom fighters and every citizen for insulting the freedom movement… and the father of the nation,” he added.

Shah on Friday had referred Mahatma Gandhi as a “bahut chatur baniya” (a very clever Baniya — the trading caste) while addressing a gathering in Raipur.

Senior Congress leader, Digvijay Singh also criticised Shah for his remark.
