Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday tested positive for Covid-19. “On getting the initial symptoms of coronavirus, I got the test done and the report came back positive. My health is fine, but I am being admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors. I request those who came in contact with me in the last few days to get tested for coronavirus and isolate themselves,” Amit Shah tweeted.
Total coronavirus cases in India have crossed the 17-lakh mark, with a surge in cases from the southern states. Active cases in India are now 567,730, with over 10 lakh recoveries so far as per the latest data. Over 37,000 people have succumbed to the virus so far in India.
With 764 new deaths in 24 hours, the health ministry put total fatalities at 36,511, giving India the world’s fifth-highest death count behind the United States, Brazil, Britain and Mexico. This is the third consecutive day that more than 50,000 new cases have been reported in 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh on Friday surpassed Delhi to become the third worst coronavirus-hit state in the country. The state has added over 30,000 cases to its tally in the last three days, taking its total of those infected by the deadly virus to 1,40,933, including 1,349 fatalities.

Actor Akshay Kumar equipped the Mumbai Police with health-tracking devices which will help them deal better with the COVID-19 situation, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray said in a tweet on Saturday.
"Earlier today, Akshay Kumar ji handed over fitness-health tracking devices to Mumbai Police. It gives a constant reading of oxygen, body temp, and heart rate, helpful in COVID battle. Last month, Akshay ji gave it to Nashik Police," the tourism minister tweeted.
A two-day-old baby has died due to Covid-19 in Tripura, becoming the state's youngest coronavirus fatality, a Health Department official said.
The baby was born on Thursday at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and her swab sample was collected as her mother was a coronavirus patient.
"The two-day-old girl tested positive for coronavirus and succumbed to the disease at the hospital on Saturday," the official said.

Mrs. Kamla Rani, Honourable Cabinet Minister, Government of UP, 62 -year-old female suffering with fever, cough and breathlessness was admitted to SGPGI after being detected COVID positive on 18.07.2020. She also had comorbidities in form of Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and hypothyroidism. She had bilateral pneumonia at admission and was shifted to ICU on the day of admission itself because of high oxygen requirement. Later she required non-invasive ventilation (NIV) with high oxygen requirements. On evaluation she had all the features of severe disease and she was given Inj. Remdesevir followed by Tocilizumab following which she had transient improvement in her clinical status for few days but again her condition started deteriorating with progressively increasing NIV and oxygen requirements. She was immediately transfused with convalescent plasma and steroid doses were hiked. The study conducted by researchers from the Yale School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital was published in JAMA Network Open, the Washington Post reported. The study used computer simulations to show how the virus might spread among a hypothetical group of 5,000 students. In the simulation, it was assumed 4,900 students are coronavirus free while 100 were assumed to be infected.

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 17.5 million, while the deaths have increased to more than 683,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University. The coronavirus death toll in Mexico has surpassed 47,000 mark, the country's Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell has announced. "On August 1, 2020 there are 434,193 confirmed cases and 87,771 suspected cases of # COVID19. China reported 49 cases of the new coronavirus in the mainland for Aug. 1, up from 45 cases a day earlier, the health commission said on Sunday. Of the new infections, 30 were in the far western region of Xinjiang, three were in the northeastern province of Liaoning, and the remaining 16 were imported cases, according to a statement by the National Health Commission.
