India’s Covid-19 death toll surged to 2,649 with the number of cases nearing the 82,000-mark. 3,967 new cases were recorded, and 100 deaths. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to announce the next tranche of the govt’s stimulus package during a presser at 4pm today.
FM Sitharaman said, “Farmers and workers are the backbones of this nation. They serve all of us with their sweat and toil. Migrant workers need affordable and convenient rental housing in urban areas in addition to social security. There is also a need to create employment opportunities for the poor, including migrant and unorganised workers. Farmers need timely and adequate credit support.”
The death toll crossed 2,500, while more than 26,000 have recovered so far. Large numbers of cases continued to get reported in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and the national capital.

China has reported 15 new COVID-19 cases, including 11 asymptomatic ones, taking the total number of coronavirus infections in the country to 82,933, health authorities said on Friday. According to China's National Health Commission (NHC), four new confirmed coronavirus case, all locally transmitted from Jilin province, were reported on Thursday.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Thursday issued guidelines for RT-PCR based pooled sampling for migrants and those returning from abroad and kept in quarantine facilities."The following guideline is in pursuance of letter of Secretary, MoHFW dated May 12, 2020, on the subject. A decision has been taken to use one time RT-PCR based pooled sampling for surveillance purposes for migrant workers in institutional quarantine facilities, international passengers in institutional quarantine facilities/hotels ear-marked for quarantine and for surveillance purposes in green zones," the document read.
Indian Railways has started taking the destination address of all passengers booking train tickets from Wednesday, which can be helpful in contact tracing, if required later. This will be a permanent feature for rail travel as India gets ready for a long battle against Covid-19. The railway ministry has also announced that all tickets which were booked for normal trains before the lockdown for the travel period up to June 30 stand cancelled.
Telangana reported 47 new positive cases of Covid-19 on Thursday taking the total tally of the novel coronavirus infection cases in the state to 1414.
While this was the fifth consecutive day of over 3,500 cases being added to the country’s Covid count, the growth rate of the infection has gradually decreased during this period.
