2 top Tripura officials removed for graft in buying medical kits

India reported the highest single-day spike of 24,850 new coronavirus cases and 613 deaths in the last 24 hours on Sunday. The number of positive cases stand at 6,73,165 including 2,44,814 active cases. The death toll is at 19,268, according to Health Ministry. A total of 18,655 patients have died because of the virus, the Union Health Ministry said today. The number of recoveries stands at 3,94,227.

The safety and interest of Indians is the topmost priority, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Saturday after a memo from the agency triggered a backlash for setting August 15 as a target for developing a coronavirus vaccine, from both medical experts and the opposition.

A letter sent out earlier this week by the chief of India’s top clinical research agency said it “envisaged” launching a novel coronavirus vaccine by Independence Day, prompting accusations by the opposition that the date was set to help Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government score political points.
