Coronavirus Outbreak: With 88,650 new cases, India's corona tally nears 60 lakh

India recorded its highest single-day peaks in Covid-19 deaths as well fresh cases on Wednesday even as the number of recovered patients breached the six-lakh mark. The country’s caseload as well as addition to active cases in the 15 days of July is close to the corresponding figures for the entire month of June.

Karnataka has overtaken Gujarat to become the third worst-hit state in the country after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the situation in the national capital was “under control”, but warned against complacency.

Addressing the media, Kejriwal said 20,000-23,000 tests were being conducted everyday, and there was no shortage of beds to treat patients.

In other news, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced government job for kin of frontline workers who lost their lives fighting against Covid-19. So far, 268 police personnel, 30 doctors, 43 nurses and 62 government officials in the state have been infected with Covid-19. Goa will impose a lockdown from 8 pm Thursday (July 16) to 6 am Monday (July 20). Besides, there will also be a “Janata Curfew” in the state from 8 pm to 6 am every day with effect from Wednesday till August 10. The state has 1,128 active cases of the coronavirus.

Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine hopes rise with strong trial results

Researchers at the University of Oxford believe they may have a breakthrough in their search for a COVID-19 vaccine after the team discovered that the jab could provide "double protection" against the deadly coronavirus following early stage human trials, according to media reports in the UK.
 
Blood samples taken from a group of UK volunteers given a dose of the vaccine showed that it stimulated the body to produce both antibodies and killer T-cells, a senior source from the trial was quoted by The Daily Telegraph' as saying.
 
The discovery is promising because separate studies have suggested that antibodies may fade away within months while T-cells can stay in circulation for years.

Bihar goes under complete lockdown from today

Bihar will be under lockdown from Thursday. The state government took the decision after a spike in the number of coronavirus disease cases.

The lockdown will be in place till July 31.

A government order on Tuesday, announcing the lockdown, said that restrictions will remain applicable to all district, sub-division and block headquarters and municipal areas.

China has given the green light to an early-stage human test for a coronavirus vaccine candidate using German firm BioNTech's technology, its local partner said on Thursday.
 
A unit of Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group plans to initiate a phase I clinical trial of the potential shot, dubbed BNT162b1, developed with BioNTech's technology, "as soon as possible once it is ready", Fosun Pharma said in a filing.
