Daily Covid-19 cases in India went past 50,000 for the first time on Sunday even as the total caseload crossed 14 lakh, capping the deadliest week of the pandemic so far, when total cases grew by 28% and the death toll jumped by 19%.
Sikkim government on Sunday extended its lockdown till August 1.
Earlier in the day, the state also reported its first Covid-19 death — a 74-year-old with comorbidities from East Sikkim. “A 74-year-old male from Rongli, East Sikkim passed away this morning, in the Covid-19 wing of STNM hospital. He had comorbidities & was suffering from hypertension & diabetes,” said a tweet from the official account of the Sikkim government’s Information & Public Relations Department.
With daily coronavirus cases (48,661) coming close to 50,000 for the third consecutive day, the total number of coronavirus infections in India rose to 13,85,522 on Sunday. The toll rose to 32,063 with 705 deaths in the last 24 hours. Currently, India has over 4.6 lakh active cases, while 8.8 lakh people have recovered. More high-risk areas were brought under lockdown on Saturday for varying periods, including weekends, by states in a bid to check the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in India.
