Dalit writer killed at his residence in Kolhapur

The 63-year-old Krushna Kiravle, a writer, orator was allegedly killed at his residence in MHADA Colony in Kolhapur’s Rajendra Nagar region in Maharashtra around 2 pm on Friday. As per the police, Kiravle was stabbed in the bedroom of his residence, located near Shivaji University. Initial probe has hinted that Kiravle’s killing could be a result of a financial row.

According to the deputy superintendent of Police Harsh Potdar, a carpenter, Pritam Patil, has been arrested for questioning in the case. All angles are being probed to find the cause behind the murder, said special Inspector General of Police Vishwas Nangare-Patil.

Kiravle’s wife, who was at home when the murder happened, had said that three persons came to their home on Friday afternoon. The probe has revealed that, recently, they had a clash with Kiravle over payment for furniture at his residence.

Kiravle was from Sirsala village in Maharashtra’s Beed district. He retired a few months ago as head of the Marathi Department of Shivaji University. Kiravle was also an eminent orator on Dalit issues. He penned books on various issues such as Dalit Shahiri, Dalit movement, writings of Baburao Bagul.

An alumnus of Milind College in Aurangabad, he was also the chairman of the 31st Asmitadarsh Sahitya Sammelan.
