The Day of Murcia, also known as the Day of the Region of Murcia, is observed annually on June 9; most businesses and organisations that observe the holiday will be closed. The Statute of Autonomy, which is a law that is subordinate to a country’s constitution and superior to all other forms of legislation, was ratified in Murcia on June 9, 1982. On the Day of Murcia, the flag of the autonomous community of Murcia is displayed in residences and carried through the streets. As many businesses and organisations are already closed on Mondays and Fridays, whenever a holiday occurs on a Tuesday or Thursday, local or regional authorities may move the holiday to a different date. A change in the date would prevent them from having to shutter their business twice per week.

HISTORY OF DAY OF MURCIA

Murcia is located in the southeastern region of Spain. Murcia is the most populous metropolis and the capital of the Region of Murcia’s autonomous community. In Spain, an autonomous community is a first-level administrative and political division established to guarantee the limited autonomy of the regions and nationalities that comprise Spain. On Day of Murcia, the flag of Murcia’s autonomous community is displayed. On a crimson background, a shield and a crown are depicted. The arms of Murcia comprise of a shield and a crown. There are eight depictions of lions and fortresses, seven depictions of crowns, and one depiction of a heart on the shield. Due to its lengthy agricultural history, vegetable, flower, and fruit production, as well as exports, the city is known as “Europe’s orchard.”

Abd ar-Rahman II, the Emir of Cordoba, founded the city of Murcia in 825. The majority of people believe that the name Murcia derives from either the Latin word’myrtea’, which means’myrtle land,’ or the Arabic word’mursa’, which means’mursa tree.’ Myrtle is a plant that thrives in the region. The name might also have been derived from the word ‘Murtia,’ which signified Murtius Village. In the 12th century, a writer and traveller named Muhammed al-Idrisi described the city of Murcia as being extremely safe and densely populated. Murcia ultimately became the capital of its own kingdom in 1031, following the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba, after being ruled by a succession of different powers. Murcia became a very prosperous city, renowned for its porcelain, which were exported to Italy, as well as its paper and silk, which were the first to be produced in Europe.

The Cortes Generales ratified the Statute of the Autonomy of the Region of Murcia through organic law. The statute has been amended four times, with the first amendment in March 1991 establishing that elections should be held every four years on the fourth Sunday in May. The second amendment, which took effect on February 28, 1992, established autonomous agreements that expanded the authority of various autonomys. The third amendment took effect on June 15, 1998, and the increased number of deputies was subject to the electoral law. The fourth amendment occurred in 2013 when article 30 was amended.
