Dehradun: Indian Military Academy cadet falls into gorge during night navigation drill; dies aged 21

A Gentleman Cadet (trainee on admission) of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) died on Tuesday after falling into a deep gorge during the night navigation drill near Langha Road on the outskirts of Dehradun.

IMA released a statement saying that the deceased cadet Amul Rawal sustained a serious injury in the head and was given medical attention at the spot. Rawal was then rushed to Military Hospital in Dehradun where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

21-year-old Rawal was an ex-NDA cadet who had joined IMA in January 2019 after three years of training at National Defence Academy. A resident of Karnal, Haryana, Rawal belonged to 145 IMA course and had passed out of the 135 NDA course. He was to be commissioned in December 2019. His father is a government servant posted at Haryana Rajbhawan in Chandigarh.

The family has been explained about the accident. According to IMA, this exercise is conducted every year for Gentlemen Cadets. However, a procedural court of inquiry has been ordered in the matter.

As per the reports, body of the deceased boy would be handed over to the family after medical formalities.

This is not the first time that casualties have taken place at the IMA during training. Two cadets of the academy had died in August 2017 while participating in 10-km run.
