The top Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar became the first gymnast from her country to win a gold medal at the Asian Senior Championships in Tashkent on Sunday.

On the last day of competitions in Uzbekistan’s capital city, Dipa scored an average of 13.566 in the vault final.

The silver and bronze medals were awarded to North Koreans Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966).

Dipa finished fourth in the vault final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but had won a bronze medal in the same event in 2015.

In the 2015 Asian Championships, Ashish Kumar won a bronze medal in individual floor exercise. Pranati Nayak also won bronze medals in the 2019 and 2022 editions of the Asian Championships.

“History created at The Asian Gymnastics Championship. Inspirational, Dipa! Congratulations on the #Gold,” Sports Authority of India tweeted.

Additionally, the gymnast from Tripura won a gold medal in vault at the 2018 FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkiye, becoming the first Indian gymnast to win a yellow metal in a global competition.

In spite of this, Dipa, who returned to competition last year after a 21-month suspension, has been eliminated from contention for the Paris Olympics. On Friday, Dipa finished 16th in the all-round category with a score of 46.166.

This is the final Olympic qualifying event for the Asian Championship.

At the FIG Apparatus World Cup in Doha in April, she placed fourth in the vault final.

Earlier, she had skipped the World Cup in Cottbus, Germany (February 22-25) after finishing fifth in Cairo (February 15-18) World Cup.
