The production of the film took some time, but it advanced as Yorgos Lanthimos worked on his 2018 film “The Favourite,” which also starred Emma Stone.

He then asked her to play the lead role at that point. The remaining performers joined the production in 2021, and from August to December of that year, they shot the movie in Hungary. In 2023, “Poor Things” had its debut at the Venice International Film Festival and took home the prestigious Golden Lion. Additionally, it will be screened at additional film festivals, including those in Telluride, New York, London, Busan, and Sitges. On December 8, 2023, Searchlight Pictures intends to distribute this film in the United States. The release date for the United Kingdom and Ireland is January 12, 2024, so those there will have to wait a little longer.

Plot

A young girl named Bella is featured in a story as she is brought back to life by her guardian, scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Bella is initially fairly naive and ignorant about the world. For her own safety, she stays close to Dr. Baxter. But she decides to leave and embark on adventures with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick-talking and less than saintly barrister, as she grows intrigued and ready to explore. They journey together to various locations.

Bella’s journey is unique in that she refuses to be limited by the injustice and prejudice of her era. Instead, she defends her rights and demands respect for all people. She desires independence and liberation. Despite the fact that Bella was brought back to life by a scientist and that she initially has no knowledge of the outside world, she chooses to travel with Duncan, a lawyer. She battles against the injustice of her day and seeks to be free and equal, which makes her story compelling.
