What Is Dol Purnima?

The Vaishnav festival of Dol Purnima which people also call Dol Jatra or Dol Utsav celebrates the deities Lord Krishna and Radha. The word “Dol” means swing because people used to display Radha and Krishna statues on decorated swings during traditional processions.

West Bengal considers the festival as an important occasion because people express their devotion through singing kirtans and applying colored powders called abir.

The Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition recognizes Dol Purnima as both the observance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birth date and the celebration of his life as the 15th-century saint who established the Gaudiya Vaishnav movement.
