Earlier, Republican nominee Donald Trump had gained a clear edge over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the fight for the swing states (states where both parties have similar levels of support) as polls close across most of the US.
Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump needed 270 electoral votes out of a possible 538 in the electoral colleges to win.
Donald Trump captured victory over Hillary Clinton in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina while Clinton has won Washington and Oregon.
The Real estate mogul earlier racked up wins in the Midwest and South, while Clinton swept the Northeast, ABC News reports.
As expected, he has been victorious in the Republican strongholds of Utah, Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina, Nebraska, Indiana, West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas.
And he also took the solidly conservative states- Georgia, Missouri, Montana, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho and Wyoming .
Both candidates cast their votes in New York alongside their spouses.
Clinton started her day by casting her vote in Newyork’s Chapaqua.
Meanwhile, the benchmark sensex opened with a negative gap of 800 points amidst a global fall in the stock market as Donald Trump leading in the US polls continues to come in, reports The Hindu.
The most divisive presidential election also openly showed the racial divide and conservatism in the modern America. Trump won the majority of white votes while Hillary drew supports from non-white voters, mainly African-Americans, Hispanics and Asian- Americans.
