Election for the Vice-President of India will be held on August 5

The elections for the 13th Vice-President of India will be held on August 5. The notification for the poll will be issued on July 4 while nominations can be submitted by July 18, said Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi at a conference held at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi.

The scrutiny will happen on July 18. Besides, the last date for withdrawing nomination is July 21. If polling is required, it will occur on August 5. The counting will also take place on the same day, said Zaidi.

The term of the incumbent vice-President Hamid Ansari will end on August 10. India Today reported that the new Vice-President may swear in on August 11.

The Electoral College that chooses the Vice President consists of elected and nominated members of both the houses. The strength of the two Houses is 790. However, there are some vacancies.

Ansari has served two terms as Vice-President. He was first elected to the post on 7 August, 2007 and then re-elected in 2012.

The Presidential elections are slated to be held on July 17. It will see the NDA’s candidate Ram Nath Kovind taking on opposition candidate Meira Kumar.
