A news clipping in a Hindi newspaper went viral on the social media that states that Election Commission will charge Rs 350 as fine if you don’t vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The news clipping appeared in Hindi newspaper Navbharat Times on Holi i.e March 21. In the article it was also written that the amount of the fine will be detected from the voter’s bank account and those people with no bank account, the amount will be deducted from their phone balance when they will recharge it.
However, the people believed the news to be true and shared the article online with their family, friends to inform them but in reality, the news was satire.
The readers assumed that ahead of lok sabha polls, it can be the government’s plan to initiate more of votings. Internet users shared the news widey with everyone on social media but one thing that they failed to see was the line at the end of the newspaper written as a disclaimer. The line in Hindi read “Iss Page ki sabhi khabre aur vigyapan kalpanik hai” (All news articles and advertisements on this page are imaginary).
No article on the page was true and it was just meant for light reading but it was assumed incorrectly by the netizens. People shared the post to aware others of the consequences of not voting this time but they failed to see the disclaimer and the news story was written for entertainment purpose only.
