Firefox 147 Launch: Mozilla has released the final build of Firefox 147 before its official launch date. The full release will happen on January 13th, 2026, but users can already see what is new.
One big change is support for the XDG Base Directory rules from Freedesktop.org. This helps Firefox keep files in the right places on Linux. Firefox 147 also improves video on AMD graphics cards, so videos play smoother and use less power. Mozilla added Safe Browsing V5 to make browsing safer. It also added full WebGPU support for Apple Silicon Macs, which helps websites show better graphics and run modern web apps.

Better Experience for Linux
Linux users get a clear improvement in this release. Firefox 147 now matches window sizes correctly with GNOME’s Mutter system. This makes text and images look sharper on screens that use fractional scaling. Pages now look cleaner no matter how large or small the window is.
Firefox 147 also supports Compression Dictionaries using IETF RFC 9842. This helps web pages load faster by sending fewer bytes. Mozilla says this is very helpful for people with slow or limited internet connections. Another change that many users will notice is Picture-in-Picture behavior. Firefox now opens Picture-in-Picture automatically if a video tab moves into the background. This feature used to be hidden in Firefox Labs, but now everyone gets it by default.
Mozilla also reorganized tab settings. Tabs are now grouped into Opening, Interaction, and Closing sections. This makes settings easier to understand for new users. There is also a new Profiles section in General settings. This lets people separate work and personal browsing. Each profile can have its own bookmarks and passwords.
New Tools for Focus
Since Picture-in-Picture left the experimental stage, Mozilla added a new test feature called “Lists and timer on Firefox Home”. This tool helps users stay focused by setting timers or reminders. It can nudge users to keep working or remind them to take breaks.
Firefox 147 also fixes many small issues. It repairs a problem that caused some HTTP/3 requests to fail. It improves dragging behavior for buttons. It also makes language settings work the same way as other browsers. Android users now get better protection against attacks like Spectre because Site Isolation is turned on by default. Windows users also see better monitor support and fewer tab selection problems.

For developers, Firefox 147 adds many tools. It now supports the Navigation API and Storage-Access-Headers. It adds new CSS features like anchor positioning and better ::marker styling. It supports Brotli compression for streams and shows active view transitions in documents. Mozilla also added Unicode 17 support, new languages, and new CSS font units. Developers can now use module service workers and import CSS with JavaScript modules.
Mozilla will officially launch Firefox 147 on January 13th, 2026, along with Firefox 140.7 ESR and 115.32.0 ESR.
