Fog engulfs northern India; disrupts over 100 trains and several flights

After the dense fog engulfed the national capital, more than 80 Delhi-bound trains were delayed by several hours with 40 trains being rescheduled. Besides, 13 trains, including Shatabdi, were cancelled owing to foggy weather conditions in the northern region, said a senior railway official.

Numerous flights were also affected due to the low runway visibility conditions at the airport in New Delhi. While a number of flights got delayed, one flight was cancelled, said the officials.

Considering the situation, the Airlines have requested commuters to cross check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Nine international and four domestic flights from Delhi gets delayed while the Delhi-Lucknow flight was cancelled.

The MeT Department forecasts clear skies for Saturday with the possibility of moderate to dense fog at some places during the morning hours. “The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 25 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively,” the MeT office said.

However, the weather department said that the fog cover in places such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim is likely to last for few more days.

Apart from trains and flights, the traffic movement on the busy National Highway (NH-1) was also affected. It runs through Punjab and Haryana, connecting Amritsar with Delhi.
