Former Bihar MP Arun Kumar defends Sharjeel Imam, says "he can’t be traitor"

Coming out in support of Sharjeel Imam, who has been slapped with sedition charges, Arun Kumar, a former MP from Jehanabad in Bihar, said that he had personal relations with Sharjeel and assures that he could not be a traitor.

Sharjeel Imam recently in his speech at Aligarh Muslim University had talked about separating Assam from the rest of India. He said that it is our responsibility to cut Assam.

After this, FIRs were registered against him in Aligarh and Assam in several serious charges including sedition and spreading disharmony on the basis of religion. Several political parties raised concern against Imam’s remarks.

However, MP Arun Kumar has stepped forward in backing Imam. According to the reports, Kumar allegedly said that whether Sharjeel is guilty or not, it will be decided in the court. No person can be called guilty through media trial. His family has contributed to the freedom struggle. He cannot be anti-country. If he has inadvertently made a mistake, then it needs to be rectified.

“I personally know Sharjeel and his family. He is not Nitish Kumar to hide personal relationship with anyone. The charges against him will be reviewed within the purview of the law. If he is guilty according to law, he will be punished.”

He said that the effort should be such that no youth is a victim of disorientation.
