Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir dies in Kolkata

Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir died at a city hospital on afternoon of Sunday at the age of 68. Kabir, who was suffering from a kidney illness and linked complications, breathed last at 2.52 PM. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

Born on July 19, 1948, Kabir was appointed as the Chief Justice of India on September 29, 2012 and retired from office on July 19, 2013. He was enrolled as an advocate in 1973. He did his practice in the district court and the Calcutta High Court in Civil and Criminal sides.

On August 6, 1990, Kabir was appointed as a permanent judge in the Calcutta High Court. Thereafter, he was selected as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on March 1, 2005. He was also appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005.

After a period of 7 years, he was appointed as the 39th Chief Justice of India – a position he held for 292 days.
