Four men try to drown cop during Ganesh idol immersion in Thane

On the occasion of immersion of the Ganpati idols in Thane, a shocking video of a policeman being pushed into a lake and four young men of a local Ganesh Utsav mandal trying to drown him has gone viral.

A case of attempt to murder has been filed against the young men from Kalyan township in Thane. On Tuesday, police received a complaint that a group stopped the immersion process in Teesgaon lake in Kolshewadi. Sub-inspector Nitin Dhagle, 38, who was on duty, went there to restart the process of immersion. He was controlling the crowd assembled for the immersion and was disciplining the members of various mandals.

Dhagle asked a member of the Jari Mari Ganesh Utsav Mandal to come in queue as he was halting the process. One of the accused then objected to it and jumped the barricade and pushed Dhagle into the lake. The policeman was beaten up and one of the men tried to jump on Dhagle to drown him.

When Dhagle tried to come out of the water, one of the four youth jumped in and again allegedly tried to drown. Dhagle, however, managed to save himself by swimming out of the lake.

The video of the incident showed people indulging in revelry while no one came to the rescue of the police officer. The accused youths are said to be supporters of a local politician.
