They kept account of the number of miles travelled by each member and devised a system based on “one mile earned for every mile travelled.” They included Hyatt hotel accommodations as well as Hertz rental vehicles, and the incentive programme was a resounding success, prompting their competitors to implement similar systems immediately.
United Airlines introduced Mileage Plus in the same year as American Airlines, upping the ante by introducing a 5,000-mile enrollment incentive.
