4 July Changes in Finance: July 2026 brings a few useful but important rule changes for people in India. Some are about tax filing and some are about passport fees. Some affect Aadhaar updates and credit card rewards. These changes may look small, but they can change what you pay and when you need to act.

ITR deadline for FY 2025-26

The biggest date for many people is the income tax return deadline. The Income Tax Department says that for AY 2026-27, the return for income earned in FY 2025-26 is due on 31 July 2026 for many taxpayers, while some non-audit cases may have a later due date.

Filing on time matters because late filing can bring extra fees and may also stop you from carrying forward some losses or changing the tax regime for that year.

Passport Fees are now higher

Passport applicants also need to pay more from 1 July 2026. The government has raised passport charges after a long gap. A fresh or reissue 36-page passport now costs ₹2,500, while the Tatkal fee for that passport is ₹5,000. The fee for a 60-page passport has also gone up. This means people planning a new passport or renewal should check the updated rate before applying so they do not get a surprise at payment time.

Aadhaar email update is free for a short time, SBI card rules also change

Aadhaar holders get one small relief this month. UIDAI has waived the fee for updating email address through the Aadhaar mobile app for a limited period. The official notice says the service will be free from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2026. After that, the usual charge will apply again. UIDAI’s notice says the charge of ₹75 has been waived for this period.

SBI Card users also need to watch for changes. SBI Card says the reward points program for PhonePe SBI Credit Card PURPLE and PhonePe SBI Credit Card SELECT BLACK will change from 1 July 2026. The card company says the reward structure will be revised, and the new rules can affect how many points people earn on daily spending. That means some cardholders may see fewer points in some spending categories.

Why these changes are Important?

These updates may seem like ordinary rule changes, but they can affect real money in small ways every day. Filing ITR late can create extra cost. A passport application can now cost more. Aadhaar email updates can be done free for a short window. Credit card rewards may also change how much value you get from shopping.
