MoHUA Shares Waste Segregation Rules: Gandhi Jayanti is coming up on October 2. Ahead of the day, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, or MoHUA, shared a reminder for people. It says that clean cities begin at home. One key step is to sort waste properly before it leaves your house.

In its message, MoHUA urged people to use four waste groups. The idea is simple. Keep different kinds of waste apart, then give them to the waste workers who are authorized to collect it. The push is linked to the larger effort under Swachhata Hi Seva 2026.

Where Should Your Waste Go?

MoHUA pointed to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. These rules say waste generators must keep waste in four separate streams at the source. The streams are listed below.

  • Wet waste: Food leftovers, vegetable peels, fruit peels, and other biodegradable kitchen waste.
  • Dry waste: Paper, plastic, and other recyclable items or non-wet materials.
  • Sanitary waste: Used sanitary pads, diapers, and similar waste. This should be wrapped properly before it is thrown for disposal.
  • Special-care waste: Things like batteries and expired medicines. These need separate handling.

What Do the New Waste Rules Say?

The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 say that any person or unit that makes waste must sort it at the point of generation. After sorting, the waste has to be given separately to approved waste pickers or waste collectors. Local authorities will say how this should be done.

The same rules also say that solid waste should not be thrown on streets. It should not be burned or buried in open public places, drains, or near water bodies. Construction and demolition waste must be kept separate too. Horticultural waste also has to be handled separately, as per the rules that apply and the directions from the local body.

For sanitary waste, the rules are clear. Items like used diapers and sanitary pads, and similar products, must be wrapped properly. They also need to be kept apart from wet waste, dry waste, and waste that needs special care.

Gandhi Jayanti 2026: Why Waste Segregation Is in Focus?

This message is coming as Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 heads to its events on October 2. The campaign started on September 17. Since then, it has pushed awareness about the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. It also highlights four-way segregation at the source as part of the work with citizens.

On October 1, cleanliness efforts are planned across the country under the ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ plan. On October 2, rural areas will hold Gram Sabha sessions. Urban areas will have Special Council Meetings. In both, people will focus on waste segregation and cleanliness.
