Justice Gita Mittal became the first-ever woman Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court after she was administered the oath of office by Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar on Saturday.
Before being sworn in as the Chief Justice, the court’s Registrar General read out the warrant of Mittal’s appointment.
The Central government had on August 3 notified the appointment of Mittal, Sindhu Sharma and Rashid Ali Dar as new judges of the High Court.

In its 90-year existence, the J&K High Court has had 107 judges and all of them have been men. Thus the appointment of Justice Mittal and Sindhu Sharma as judges marks an important milestone for the state’s judiciary.
Former Chief Minister Farooq and Omar Abdullah, Governor’s advisors, serving and former judges, Chief Secretary B.V.R. Subrahmayan, Director General of Police S.P. Vaid were among those who attended the oath-taking ceremony.
