What is Goa Liberation Day?

Goa Liberation Day is celebrated on December 19th every year. It marks the day when India regained control of Goa from Portugal. The day is also known as “D-Day” in Goa. On this day, the Indian Armed Forces entered Goa and liberated it from the Portuguese colonial rule. The liberation of Goa was a significant event in India’s struggle for independence.

Since 1961, Goa has been celebrating its Liberation Day with great joy and enthusiasm. Various cultural and patriotic events are organized throughout the state to mark the occasion. On this day, the people of Goa remember those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the state. They also reaffirm their commitment to preserve and protect the freedom that they have enjoyed for so many years.

The History of Goa Liberation Day

December 19th is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day in the Indian state of Goa. On this day in 1961, the Indian Armed Forces overthrew Portuguese rule in Goa, Daman, and Diu after a 36-hour military operation.

After India gained independence from British rule in 1947, the Portuguese refused to cede their control over Goa, Daman, and Diu. The people of these territories were subjected to oppressive conditions, including high taxes, censorship, and forced religious conversion. In addition, the Portuguese authorities restricted travel and communication with the rest of India.

In 1955, India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru ordered a naval blockade of Goa in an effort to pressure the Portuguese government to relinquish control. The blockade failed to achieve its goal, and diplomatic relations between India and Portugal deteriorated further.

Finally, on December 19th, 1961, the Indian Armed Forces launched “Operation Vijay” – a military operation to take control of the territories held by Portugal. After 36 hours of fighting, the Indian forces were victorious and Portugal was forced to surrender. On December 19th, 1961 – exactly 452 years after Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first arrived in India – Goa was liberated from colonial rule.
