Lunar New Year 2023 (South Korea): Today’s Doodle celebrates Seollal () in Korean, the Lunar New Year. This important holiday is celebrated annually by South Koreans with family gatherings, traditional feasts, and festive games.
(sebae) is a major Korean custom in which young people kneel on the ground and bow their heads to older people as a sign of respect and to wish them a happy new year. Afterwards, older people frequently reward the youth with money enclosed in envelopes containing well-wishes. Families then feast on traditional dishes such as tteokguk (), a creamy rice cake soup, and jeon (), sweet fritters.
During the celebrations of the new year, Korean families play games such as yunnori (), in which two teams attempt to move their pieces around a board. The distance a team can advance along the board is determined by tossing alternately curved and flat sticks along the curved and flat slides.
This is the Year of the Rabbit, which is associated with prosperity and peace. In observance of the time-honored Lunar New Year tradition, the Doodle is crafted from papercuts. Between paying respects and playing games, Seollal () is a celebration that is enjoyable for everyone.
Best wishes for the New Year, South Korea!
