Senior Congress leader, P Chidambaram slammed the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the death of children in Gorakhpur government hospital saying that, a government that cannot protect children does not deserve to rule.

“Gorakhpur is a man-made tragedy. The nation waits to see if any honourable man will take responsibility. A government that cannot protect its children does not deserve to rule,” he said.

Congress in UP termed the large number of infant deaths as “murder” and demanded resignation of chief minister, Yogi Adityanath. It asked he was unable to handle an institution, how will he run the state. The Congress has also demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the death.

In the meantime, Dr Kafeel Ahmad, the head of the pediatrics department and the encephalitis ward at medical college hospital was sacked from his post of nodal officer on Sunday. Reportedly, he saved the lives of as many kids as possible with his quick thinking and by using his own money. However, the government has not yet given any reasons for sacking Ahmad.

Dr Bhupendra Sharma has been appointed as new nodal officer.
