Government Shutdown services closed 2025: In 2025, the US government is shutting down and many people are worries about Social Security. Some office tasks will be delayed or paused but the Social Security Administration (SSA) says important services will keep going.
Payments for retirement, disability, survivor benefits, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will still arrive on schedule. These come from a trust fund, not from yearly government budgets, so they are safe even during the shutdown.
These benefits come from a trust fund rather than yearly appropriations, making them part of “mandatory spending,” which is not affected by the shutdown.

What Services will Continue During the Shutdown?
The SSA says local field offices will stay open but at reduced capacity. People can still apply for benefits, submit appeals, update their address or direct deposit, report a death, verify or change citizenship status, issue replacement or lost payments, provide critical payments, change a representative payee, and get new or replacement Social Security cards. Hearing offices before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) will also keep working. These steps ensure that beneficiaries continue receiving essential services during the shutdown.
Services That will be Limited or Paused
Not all Social Security services can keep going with fewer staff. Things like giving benefit verification letters, replacing Medicare cards, fixing earnings records, handling overpayments, and dealing with Freedom of Information Act requests are on hold.
The SSA has also paused or slowed down more complicated work like Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) and SSI redeterminations. Customer service is affected too, with longer waits on calls and fewer services in offices. Even the 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) announcement might be late because important inflation data may not come on time
How will this affect Americans?
For most people already receiving Social Security or SSI, the good news is that monthly benefit checks will arrive as expected.
