Yogi Adityanath government to soon give condoms as ‘shagun’ (ceremonial offering) to newly-weds in Uttar Pradesh. This ceremonial offering kit will not only contain condoms but will also have oral contraceptive pills distributed by ASHA workers. The kit will also come with a family planning message to help create awareness in the society.

This initiative has been taken by the state government to promote family planning and to control population.  This scheme will be launched on July 11, which is also celebrated as World Population Day. This ‘nayi pahal’ kit will include a pack of condoms, emergency contraceptives, oral contraceptives and other token gifts for the bride and the groom. This kit will also have a letter from the health department which will brief the readers about the importance of family planning and the minimum gap between two children. It will also have a FAQ brochure written in an easy understandable language to provide clarity to newly married couple on various issues.

Avneesh Saxena, who is the project manager of Mission Parivar Vikas said, “The aim is to prepare newly wed couples about responsibilities of married life”.

For those who cannot read, ASHA workers who will be giving the kits will also be explaining them. Also, if the couple has any doubt after reading the brochure than that will be cleared by the ASHA workers. ASHA (accredited social health activists) is community health workers instituted by the government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as part of the National Rural Health Mission.
