Days after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was found guilty of raping two women in 2002, the Supreme Court on Monday attacked Gujarat government for slow trial in the self-styled godman, Asaram Bapu rape case.

A bench comprising justices NV Ramanna and Amitava Roy asked state why the victim has not been examined yet. The SC also asked the Gujarat government to file an affidavit in this concern.

The case was lodged by two Surat-based sisters against the self-styled godman.

Months before, the apex court asked the trial court in Gujarat to speed up the recording of evidence of prosecution witnesses. The court had then directed Surat trial court to also record the testimonies remaining prosecution witnesses.

The top court had earlier refused to grant bail to the rape convict on several grounds. There are two different sexual assault cases against him filed in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The court dismissed his bail plea on 30 January noting that Asaram had placed ‘fake documents’ to get bail. After this the court ordered FIR against those accountable for preparing fake papers.
