Happy Puthandu 2023: Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarudam, is the first day of the Tamil calendar or the first day of the Chithirai month and signifies the beginning of the Tamil New Year. This year, it will be observed on April 14. The day is a national holiday in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
On Puthandu, the state of Tamil Nadu prepares a special dish known as “Mangai Pachadi.” Puthandu is commemorated with great fervour in Tamil Nadu, and on this day a special dish known as “Mangai Pachadi” is prepared. It is believed that consuming this dish on Puthandu will bring balance and harmony to one’s life, as the dish’s sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy flavours represent the various emotions one encounters in their lifetime.
In addition to mango pachadi and pongal, the Puthandu buffet also features vadai, sambhar, sadam (rice), payasam, appalam (papad), vegetable curry, fresh mango pickle and yoghurt.
Amirians pay respect to family elders and greet one another with Puthandu Nalvalthukal, which translates to “Happy New Year”
