Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has defended his government’s measures to compensate farmers affected by subnormal rainfall, amid sharp criticism from the Congress party. Saini, addressing a press conference, stated that while in power, Congress gave farmers only ‘meagre amounts’ for their losses.
Anticipating the announcement of assembly polls, Saini intensified his critique of Congress’s ‘Haryana Maange Hisab’ campaign, labeling it as a campaign of falsehoods. He highlighted a recent cabinet decision to compensate affected farmers at Rs 2,000 per acre and announced the release of an initial Rs 525 crore. Saini emphasized that all registered farmers would receive compensation directly in their bank accounts.
The Chief Minister also accused Congress of feigning concern for farmers while recounting their previous failures. According to Saini, the BJP-led government has provided Rs 13,276 crore as compensation over the last decade compared to minimal amounts during the Congress rule. He condemned the Congress for allegedly exploiting farmers by misappropriating their land for commercial benefit.
