Historic India-Afghanistan T20I Series:In a landmark moment for international cricket, Afghanistan is set to host India in a bilateral series for the very first time. While Afghanistan is the official host nation, the three-match T20 International (T20I) series is said to be staged at the famous Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi this September. Some reports hint that both cricket boards have sort of reached an understanding and a formal announcement could come in the next few weeks.

This upcoming series feels like a big milestone for the cricketing bond between India and Afghanistan. Ever since Afghanistan got Full Member status from the International Cricket Council (ICC), the team has climbed fast, one of the quickest-rising sides in world cricket. Even if India come as the touring side and even if it is at a neutral ground, having a cricket powerhouse like India here still underlines how far Afghan cricket has traveled in the last decade.

Why Is Afghanistan Hosting India in Delhi?

Afghanistan has often leaned on venues beyond its home borders for international games, mainly because of infrastructure limits, and some logistical headaches. India has been supportive of Afghan cricket for years, including by sharing facilities and offering places for international fixtures. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi has earlier been used as a sort of adopted home ground for Afghanistan.

“BCCI and ACB share a good relationship. BCCI has been helping other boards like Ireland, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe by sending Indian teams to play a series there to boost the finances of those board. An understanding has been reached between BCCI and ACB in this regard. An official announcement will be made after a few modalities are completed,” a BCCI source told TOI.

“The BCCI mediated an understanding between ACB the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for availability to be the home base for Afghanistan for the series. The DDCA is also scheduling its Delhi Premier League T20 accordingly,” the source added.

According to reports, the following dates are being discussed for the three-match T20I series in Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi:

  • 1st T20: September 13, 2026
  • 2nd T20: September 16, 2026
  • 3rd T20: September 19, 2026

India vs Afghanistan Rivalry

India and Afghanistan have put out a bunch of truly memorable encounters in T20 cricket. India has usually stayed on top in the head to head sort of way, but Afghanistan keeps showing that they can hang with and sometimes trouble. The kind of fight from players like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Ibrahim Zadran.

“The itinerary has been shared with India’s national selection committee since they have to pick a 15-member T20 team for the Asian Games in late Sept. The cricket event at Asian Games is due to start on Sept 23. The selectors will pick the team accordingly,” the BCCI source said.

For India, this series will be a chance to run different combinations, also to build extra depth ahead of a packed international calendar that’s coming up soon. On the other hand, Afghanistan will be looking at this run as a real opening to make a statement against one of cricket’s biggest nations.
