In a shocking case of honor killing, a couple was shot dead in Kaimur district of southwest Bihar as their son eloped with a girl of another caste to marry her. The couple’s two daughters were also injured in the attack.

The incident happened at Mubarakpur village in Mohania police station area of the district, 216 km southwest of state capital, Patna. All family members were sleeping on terrace when the assailants reached and opened fire.

The assailants killed Kamla Chaudhary, 50, and his wife Shanti Devi, 45, instantly, police said. Chaudhary’s daughters were injured and had been referred to Institute of Medical Sciences-Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU), Varanasi, for treatment.

As per the police, incident appeared to be a clear case of honour killing. They quoted one of the daughters saying that her brother Dharmendra Chaudhary eloped with a girl of another caste about three months back. Dharmendra and the girl were living in Delhi.

The family of the girl was not happy with the wedding as Dharmendra was an OBC. Her relatives had said they would take revenge from Dharmendra’s family, the villagers said. The brother of the girl had criminal background, they said.

Police teams were conducting raids on suspected hideouts of the assailants.
