Hotstar Specials: M.S. Dhoni Docu-Drama, The Office Remake and more

Hotstar is working with Applause Entertainment that’s the content studio from the Aditya Birla Group.

Hotstar announced five originals under the new category of ‘Hotstar Specials’ that includes Indian Cricket MS Dhoni in a Hindi language docudrama called Roar of the Lion, remake of British shows The Office and Criminal Justice, and Israeli drama Hostages. The fifth one is a Mumbai based political drama from Nagesh Kukunoor called City of Dreams.

Hotstar is working with Applause Entertainment that’s the content studio from the Aditya Birla Group for all the show except Dhoni’s Roar of the Lion. Although the release date for the shows have not been announced Roar of the Lion has got the exact release date and that is March 20 and others are likely to roll out later this month.

On Dhoni’s series, he said that he is very excited for his first production collaboration. The story and narrative are unique and will offer the story of the cricket that will not be known even by his close friends.

The Indian remake of The Office has been made by Rohan Sippy (Nautanki Saala!), Debbie Rao (Better Life Foundation, Pushpavalli), and Vivek “Bumpy” Bhushan (Bank Chor). Though Hotstar hasn’t officially announced its synopsis or cast, a report claims that it’s about Jagdeep Chaddha, the boss of paper company Wilkins Chawla, in Delhi. Mukul Chadda (I, Me Aur Main), Gopal Dutt (TVF Pitchers), Sayandeep Sengupta (Chitrakut), Samridhi Dewan (Lucknow Central), Gauhar Khan (Game), Gavin Methalaka (Katti Batti), comedian Mallika Dua, and Priyanka Trehan are reportedly part of the cast.

Series Criminal Justice has brought under writer Tigmanshu Dhulia and director Vishal Furia. The cast includes Vikrant Massey, Pankaj Tripathi and Jackie Shroff in pivotal roles.

Sudhir Mishra (Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi) is helming the remake of Israeli thriller Hostages, with Ronit Roy (Adaalat), Tisca Chopra (Chutney), and Parvin Dabas (Monsoon Wedding) part of the cast.

Kukunoor’s City of Dreams has cast Atul Kulkarni (Rang De Basanti), Sachin Pilgaonkar (Nadiya Ke Paar), Eijaz Khan (Yeh Moh Moh Ke Dhaagey), Priya Bapat (Aamhi Doghi), and Siddharth Chandekar (Classmates).

These new originals by Hotstar will be available in seven languages that include Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. The Star India–owned streaming service, which runs on a freemium model, also claims that it’s the biggest in the country with over 150 million monthly active users. The streaming service had earlier announced that it is working with 15 filmmakers to create original content for it.
