In an effort to create a beggar-free city, the officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been picking up beggars and taking them to Anand Ashram, a rehabilitation centre for beggars in the premises of Cherlapally jail.

It was amid the same cause that a 70-year-old woman, identified as Bijli Pentamma, was traced begging at Moosarambagh near Malakpet last Friday, when the GHMC officials moved her to the rehabilitation centre Anand Ashram, which is being run in the Cherlapally prison premises.

When the ashram authorities carried out a routine check of Pentamma’s belongings, they found a sum of Rs 2,34,320 in her bag. She was also wearing silver bangles and a chain.

According to the authorities, Pentamma came out of the home when one of her sons died and other went missing. Pentamma had sold her property at Amberpet for Rs 2 lakh in 2011. She gave Rs 1 lakh to her children and grandchildren and kept the rest for herself.
