Hyderabad: Haneef Chacha's free ambulance auto is a messiah for people in need

When the world gives you instances of inhumanity and cruelty, it also blesses you with people who always keep the hope of humanity alive. So is the case with Mohammed Haneef.

Even at the age of 84, retirement is the last thing on his mind. While on the one hand, he takes people from place to another; on the other hand, his auto-rickshaw doubles up as an ambulance.

One such case amongst them is of Ram Singh. Last year, Singh, a tea stall owner in Gachibowli, faced a difficult situation. His four-month-old son, Akhilesh Kumar, who had been discharged from ICU, developed complications again within a few days and needed to be rushed to the hospital.

Instead of calling an ambulance, which he thought might take time, he dialled Haneef’s number, who appeared within 20 minutes with his autorickshaw. He drove Ram Singh and his son to Niloufer Hospital at Lakdikapul.

“My son is fine now. The government hospital took good care of him, but that is their work. More than the hospital, I am grateful to Haneef bhai. I had got his number from my brother, and Haneef bhai did not charge a penny that day, said Ram Singh.

The resident of Zehra Nagar, Banjara Hills, Haneef has been driving his auto for the past five decades and has six sons and two daughters.

As per a media report, Haneef says his children are doing well and his duty is done. But he wishes to do something for the society so that if he were to be questioned about his deeds by God, he will be ready with an answer.

There is one other reason why ‘auto chacha’ does this work. In 2007, he cycled to Mecca for haj. He wishes to go for Haj again this year and believes his good work will help him earn blessings and make his journey easy

A media report quoted Haneef as saying, “Jab tak saans hai, awaam ki khidmat karenge” (Till my last breath, I will serve the public).

Haneef chacha has been driving thousands of people to private and public hospitals for free since 2017.
