On Monday, Shivakumara Swamiji, the senior-most Lingayat seer of Karnataka took his final breaths at Siddaganga Mutt, Tumakuru, Karnataka as he succumbed to lung infection. Swami was a presided the Sree Siddaganga Matt, providing education to people in a near to Bangalore location city of Tumkur.

Thanks to the work done by him at the matt, close to 13000 people used to get their meals.

Even the Former President of India, Abdul Kalam Azad had said words full of praise for the work done by Swamiji. In his Parliamentary address of May 10, 2007, Kalam had said about Swamiji, “His Holiness Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamiji of Sree Siddaganga Matt of Tumkur is an example of spreading the message of giving. He has been on a tireless mission of socio-economic development and eradication of inequalities in education.”

Kalam then went on to recite his poem composition, that he had written for “Walking God” – fondly used by devotees to refer to him.

O my fellow citizens,
In giving, you receive happiness,
In Body and Soul
You have everything to give.
If you have the knowledge, share it
If you have resources, share them with the needy.
Use your mind and heart,
To remove the pain of the suffering,
And, cheer the sad hearts.
In giving, you receive happiness
Almighty will bless all your actions.

In 1930, Swamiji became a Lingayat monk and began a boarding school for poor children. Reports say that “Walking God” in his youth travelled Karnataka on foot, spreading the importance of self-reliance and modern integrity.

On Saturday, the state Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara had urged Central government to honor Shivakumara Swamiji with Bharat Ratna.
