Income Tax returns 2025: Filing income tax returns can feel tricky when someone earns from many places like salary, rent, trading in stocks or getting paid as a content creator or freelancer. Many people make small errors while reporting income or choosing the correct tax form, and these mistakes can lead to mismatches with government tax records. That could result in a tax notice or even scrutiny later.

What Mistakes People make While ITR Filing?

People who have salary income often forget to report other income like bank interest, money from rent or any profit from selling shares. Tax expert S R Patnaik said that even if some people report this extra income, they often don’t report it properly or forget to claim the deductions they deserve. These errors cause a mismatch with Form 26AS or AIS records that show what income the government already knows about.

Another big mistake is choosing the wrong ITR form. According to Business Standard, Aarti Raote explained that if someone earns by giving consultancy services along with a job, they cannot use ITR-1. In that case, they may need to file ITR-3 instead. She also said when people wait till the last minute, they rush and forget to check if everything matches across their documents.

And even if someone fills everything correctly and files it online, they still need to verify the return. Siddharth Nigotia pointed out that if someone forgets to verify the return, then it becomes invalid, as if it was never filed.

How to Report Income From Different Sources?

Experts say keeping records clear and updated is the first step. People should check money received from platforms like YouTube, stock brokers or clients and match it with what is shown in Form 26AS and AIS. Patnaik said it’s important to keep bank statements, invoices, and Form 16A handy to track TDS credits properly.

He said to make sure all the income like YouTube payments, UPI credits or consulting payments are added under the correct category, either “income from other sources” or “business income.” Nigotia added that one must go through every entry in the AIS form to check for things like high-value transactions, rent, dividend or any TDS that is already showing.

Raote also said that checking income summaries from brokers or consultants regularly helps. These companies usually give a yearly report, but still, the taxpayer must compare them with government data to avoid missing anything.

What if you Missed Reporting some Income?

If someone forgot to report a part of their income, there is still time to fix it. Patnaik said that a person can file a revised return under Section 139(5) until December 31, 2025. If it’s done on their own before getting any notice, there won’t be any penalty. Raote explained that if this deadline is missed, one can still file an updated return within four years, but that would come with extra tax and penalties.

Nigotia also said that fixing the return before the deadline is a smart move because there usually isn’t any penalty. However, if there was unpaid tax, interest may still apply.

Having more than one bank account doesn’t change how much tax someone has to pay, but it makes tracking all income difficult. Nigotia explained that all income is taxable, no matter which account it goes into. Even money received through UPI over ₹50,000 in a year should be reported under the right category. Patnaik said people should combine and check all their financial data before they start filing taxes, so they don’t forget any income.

Raote also reminded that the new ITR forms ask for details about all bank accounts held in the year, so knowing what came into each account is important now.
