Govt Pushes Aadhaar App on Smartphones: The government has put forward a plan that requires all new smartphones sold in India to come with the Aadhaar App pre-installed. The initiative strives to improve accessibility to vital identity services but has faced strong resistance from international technology companies such as Apple and Samsung and other smartphone production companies.

The Unique Identification Authority of India, which operates Aadhaar, started developing the program in January 2026, according to multiple news sources. The plan involves collaborating with smartphone makers to ensure the Aadhaar app comes preloaded, similar to default apps like camera or calculator.

The government believes that such pre-installation would:

  • Improve access to Aadhaar services instantly
  • Reduce dependency on manual downloads
  • Enable seamless identity verification for banking, telecom, and travel services

Aadhaar has established itself as one of the largest biometric identification systems in the world because more than 1.3 billion people use it.

Why Apple, Samsung, and Others Are Opposing?

The industry has not received the proposal in a favorable manner. The Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology, which represents major tech firms, has formally opposed the move.

Apple and Samsung have raised concerns about user data protection and security weaknesses, according to their reports. Aadhaar has undergone evaluation in previous instances because of data leaks and security breaches, which now create doubts about using deeper system integration.

Manufacturers would need to establish distinct production lines for domestic and export markets because of the requirement to pre-install a government app that is designed specifically for India.

In an internal email sent on January 13, MIAT stated that this proposal “would not drive greater public good.” MAIT has reportedly opposed the Sachet app’s preinstallation in a letter to Indian IT ministry official Ravinder Kumar Meena on March 10, 2026.

The industry stakeholders predict that mandatory preloads will create unnecessary “bloatware” which will degrade device performance while restricting user options.

Not the First Preload Controversy

The current proposal has previously triggered public arguments. The government tried to enforce mandatory Sanchar Saathi app pre-installation requirements during its 2025 enforcement attempt. The public response to the plan developed into major opposition.

People interpret the Aadhaar proposal because it functions as a “request” which does not require compliance but they believe it will enable authorities to monitor their mobile devices.

What does the Aadhaar App Offer?

The Aadhaar app for Android devices, which was released in 2023, provides users with the following digital identification features:

  • Digital identity verification
  • Biometric locking/unlocking
  • Family profile management
  • QR-based secure sharing

The Aadhaar system provides these functions to enable users to access its services without needing to present physical identification documents.

Current Status

The Aadhaar app preload plan continues to be evaluated by officials who have not yet issued an official requirement. The government continues to work with stakeholders according to reports, which state that the proposal might undergo implementation or modification or complete cancellation.
