India vs B’desh: Pujara breaks 5 decade old record

On the 1st day of the one-off Test match against Bangladesh, Cheteshwar Pujara broke five-decade old record for scoring most number of runs in an Indian first-class season.

The record was previously held by Chandu Borde, who scored 1604 runs in 1964-65. As Pujara reached his personal score of 83, he surpassed Borde by a run.

Pujara needed 21 innings to score his runs, seven less than Borde. He has had a terrific average of 89.16 this season, and has scored 6 hundreds.

He will extend his record, though, as he has a maximum of four more Tests to play against Australia before the season ends.

Interestingly, the third highest aggregate of runs by an Indian batsman in a single season stands in Pujara’s name. He had scored 1585 runs during the 2012-13 season.

On 23 Aug 2012, Pujara hit his first Test hundred in Hyderabad when he slammed a majestic 159 against New Zealand. A little over six months later, the Rajkot-born player, who has a penchant of scoring big hundreds, came up with his second Test double century at the same venue against Australia on March 2, 2013.

Both these innings established Pujara’s special relationship with the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at Uppal.

And on Thursday, the relationship just grew a bit stronger.

Pujara, who came to bat when India were in trouble at 2/1 in the first over, overcame occasional discomforts to set the foundation for another special knock at his favourite venue.

Pujara, along with Murali Vijay, steered India out of the rough waters with a 178-run stand for the second wicket, becoming the second-best Indian pair in terms of runs scored in a season. It was a perfect fixture for Pujara. The ground was his den, and with favourite batting partner at the other end, Pujara looked destined for his 11th hundred.

However, sometimes even destiny can take a wrong turn.

Trying to defend one against young Bangladesh off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Pujara got a thick outside edge which was well collected by the visiting captain Mushfiqur Rahim. It brought an end to Pujara’s fluent innings of 83.
