Indian Railways Announces Fare Hike: Starting July 1, 2025, Indian Railways is planning its first fare increase in over a decade, implementing a small increase that would balance covering the operational costs while keeping the trips affordable for the average commuter. This across-the-board fare hike will mostly hit people traveling longer distances, imposing increases of at least 14%, with even higher amounts16% levied on higher-class coaches, including on the Mail/Express and AC classes. The shift mirrors Indian Railways’ efforts to provide higher-quality service and infrastructure while avoiding a crippling financial burden on passengers.
Indian Railways Announces Fare Hike
For non-AC Mail and Express trains, it will increase by 1 paise per kilometre, and for AC classes—including AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier and AC First Class—it’s 2 paise per kilometre. There is no change in fare for ordinary second class passengers for a distance of up to 500 kilometres while beyond this distance, a 0.5 paise per kilometre increase will be effected.
Most significantly, there will be no increase in fares for suburban trains and monthly season tickets (MST), keeping daily commuters, particularly in metro areas, bubble-wrapped from fare hikes. Not for short-haul, daily commuters particularly those on suburban services or with season tickets as there’s no immediate effect on fares.
What is changing?
The proposal represents a fair approach, intentionally trying to raise more revenue but ensuring that the most basic and affordable forms of travel remain available to the majority. As an instance, travelling 1,000-km in a non-AC Mail train will now be ₹10 dearer, whereas the equal distance in AC courses would lead to a ₹20 raise. This tiny increase has been very precisely computed so as to not cause undue economic hardship to riders.
Indian Railways to Use E-Aadhaar Authentication for Tatkal Ticket Bookings
Tatkal Ticket Booking System
In addition to the fare changes, Indian Railways is making big changes to its Tatkal ticket booking system. From July 1, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and app. Additionally, from 15 July onwards, Tatkal bookings will need Aadhaar-based OTP verification. To prevent abuse, government-approved agents will be prohibited from reserving Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes each day. That is, 10:00 to 10:30 am for AC class and 11:00 to 11:30 am for non-AC class. These steps, as claimed by Indian Railways, aim at improving transparency, curbing misuse, and help genuine travelers to avail Tatkal service more efficiently.
