Organised by three organizations, International Stuttering Association, European League of Stuttering Associations and International Fluency Association, the Stammering Awareness Day is observed each year on October 22, since the year 1998.
The day is intended to raise public awareness of the millions of people – one percent of the world’s population – who have the speech disorder of stuttering, also known as stammering.
Theme: Speak Your Mind
The theme suggests that one might not let this speech disorder hold you back from sharing your thoughts and speaking your mind. Stammering is usually overlooked as a problem and a lot of people who stammer face a lot of bullying all across the world which can lead to various mental health issues.
List of Hindi films projecting the issue of stuttering
Bollywood has come a long way and is now touching sensitive topics. A few actors from the industry such as Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, have played characters that suffer from a stammering problem in various movies and have been successful in impressing the audience with their performances.
Vicky Kaushal in Zubaan
Film Zubaan released in 2016, tried to belie the perception that Indian films are not particularly sensitive when it comes to portrayal of differently abled people. The film features newcomer Vicky Kaushal as a stuttering ambitious small-towner out to prove his worth in the big bad world. According to the reports, actor Kaushal was so focused on getting the part right that he almost started stuttering for real during the course of shooting the film.
Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey
Shahhid Kapoor played a double role in the movie Kaminey, and both the characters have a speech defect. While one brother has a lisp and pronounces “sh” as “f”, the other stammers. Shahid manages to pull off both the roles in a magnificent manner.
Ranbir Kapoor in Jagga Jasoos
Ranbir Kapoor plays a high school kid having a serious stammering issue in the movie Jagga Jasoos and the talented actor managed to do complete justice to the role. Mind you, this is the second time he pulled off this role. We did see him stammer a little in the movie Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani in which he was paired opposite Katrina Kaif.

The Pink girl plays the role of a stammering poetess in the movie Indu Sarkar and pulls off the character with ease. It is a movie set during the Emergency era where a single woman decides to stand up against the system. Kirti admits to having trained hard for this role and it is very evident from her performance
