ITR Filing Portal Glitche: The income tax department gave taxpayers one extra day to file their income tax return for the financial year 2024-25. This small relief came after many people, including chartered accountants, reported that the portal was not working properly. They had asked the government to give more time because of glitches and technical problems.
ITR Due Date Extension 2025: What Taxpayers Need to Know About Penalties and Grace Period
The Central Board of Direct Taxes said in a late night circular that the original last date for filing was July 31, 2025. Later it got extended to September 15, 2025. But after problems on the website, the CBDT said the new last date will be September 16, 2025. By September 15, more than 7 crore returns were already filed, the department shared.
What happens if you still miss the Date?
Even with this extra day, there was still a chance some people could not complete their filing. If that happens, they have to submit a belated return, which usually brings penalty. But the condonation of delay option can help in such cases.
Under Section 119(2)(b) of the Income Tax Act, taxpayers can file a request explaining their hardship. If the income tax authority accepts it, then no extra tax, interest, or penalty has to be paid. This provision works as a kind of relief for people who faced genuine difficulty.
Tax expert Avnish Arora, Executive Director, Direct Tax, Forvis Mazars India, explained that people should keep screenshots of the issues they faced on the portal.
He said, “These screenshots help show that the taxpayer was making a genuine effort to file the return on time, but was experiencing technical problems that were beyond their control.”
Arora also explained that keeping proper documentation of the timeline supports the request and makes relief more likely. He added, “The representation for condonation should specifically outline the issue experienced, what attempts were made to correct the issue, and all supporting documentation should be submitted in conjunction with your representation.”
At the same time, Arora warned that approval of such requests is not guaranteed. He said it depends on the discretion of the department. “The Department may allow such requests only if the reasons for delay are found to be genuine and satisfactory. Nevertheless, in certain instances, some Courts have taken a favourable view and condoned the delay, even where the Department had earlier rejected the assessee’s request looking into the facts, circumstances and reasons for delay,” he added, reports News 18.

CA’s advice for taxpayers
CA Sonu Jain, Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, 9Point Capital, also reminded taxpayers to keep screenshots to prove their attempts. He said that such proof will make a stronger case for condonation later, if they fail to file on time because of portal issues.
