Jan Aushadhi Kendra in India: The government has made the process of opening a Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra much easier. Now people and organisations can apply online through the official website. This update was recently shared by the Press Information Bureau.

Anyone who wants to start a Jan Aushadhi store can now visit the Jan Aushadhi portal and submit their application online. This step is part of the government’s effort to expand the number of stores that sell affordable generic medicines across India.

The main aim of the programme is to make medicines cheaper and easier to access for people across the country.

What is a Jan Aushadhi Kendra?

Jan Aushadhi Kendras are medicine shops that sell general medicines at much lower prices compared to branded drugs. According to PIB, “This initiative aims to provide good-quality generic medicines through specialised stores at 50-80 per cent lower prices than branded medicines.”

These stores work under the government scheme called the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana. The scheme focuses on lowering healthcare expenses for the public by making quality medicines available at affordable prices.

At present thousands of such centres are already running across the country. The government plans to increase the network further and hopes to reach around 25,000 centres by the year 2027.

How to Apply Online?

People who want to open a Jan Aushadhi store can apply online by following a few simple steps. The process starts by visiting the official website of the scheme.

  • Visit the official PMBJP website: janaushadhi.gov.in
  • Click on the “Apply Online” option on the portal.
  • Fill in the required details and upload the necessary documents.
  • Submit the application and wait for verification by the authorities.

After the authorities approve the application the person can begin setting up the Jan Aushadhi Kendra.

Who can Open a Jan Aushadhi Store?

The government allows different types of applicants to open these stores. This includes individuals as well as organisations that want to help provide affordable medicines.

  • Individual Entrepreneurs
  • Registered Pharmacists
  • Doctors
  • Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
  • Charitable Institutions
  • Trusts and Private Hospitals

However the applicant must meet certain conditions before starting the store. They need proper retail space and the required licence to sell medicines.

Details of the Jan Aushadhi Scheme

  • Purpose: To reduce out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare by providing affordable, high-quality generic medicines.
  • Coverage: The product basket includes over 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical and medical devices and consumables.
  • Accessibility: Over 16,912 Kendras are functional as of mid-2025, with a target of 25,000 by March 2027.
  • Support: Special incentives up to Rs 2 lakh are provided to women, SC/ST, Divyangjan, and veterans to establish centres.
  • Additional Products: The scheme includes affordable Jan Aushadhi Suvidha sanitary napkins priced at ₹1.
  • Implementation: Managed by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.
